Anna Reminds Drivers to Slow Down in School Zones as Classes Resume
Anna ISD classes resumed Aug. 5, and the City of Anna is asking drivers to be extra cautious in school zones now that campuses are back in full swing, with children walking, biking and boarding buses during morning and afternoon commute times.
City officials are urging motorists to slow down, stay alert, put phones away, watch for children near crosswalks and bus stops, and stop for school buses when their lights are flashing. Texas law allows for enhanced fines for speeding violations committed in an active school zone, and officers in Anna and neighboring cities typically increase enforcement in the opening weeks of the school year.
School zone enforcement hours vary by grade level. Elementary school zones are active from 6:55 to 7:40 a.m. and 3:35 to 4:20 p.m. Middle school zones run from 7:50 to 8:35 a.m. and 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. High school zones are in effect from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and 4:25 to 5:10 p.m.
City officials say the reminder is meant to help drivers and families adjust to increased traffic around campuses now that students are more than a week into the new school year. Anna is one of several fast-growing Collin County communities that have seen school zone traffic increase in recent years as new subdivisions bring more families with school-age children into the district.
